split ends

Since split ends are a sign of hair breakage, some people are under the impression that the more split ends you have, the longer it will take for your hair to grow. Some people even believe that split ends cause hair loss.

Do Split Ends Cause Hair Loss?

Contrary to popular belief, split ends do not cause hair loss or stop hair from growing. This is because the hair grows from the roots, so the ends being split or broken have no impact on how the hair grows. As long as your roots stay healthy, your hair will keep growing, no matter how many split ends or how much breakage you have.

Causes of Split Ends

Several things can cause split ends, including:

Tight ponytails: Rubber bands can easily rip out several strands of hair when you take your ponytail out at the end of the day, causing breakage and split ends. To avoid this, use a soft scrunchie rather than an elastic rubber band.

Heat styling: Blow dryers, curling irons, straightening irons, and other heat stylers are great for helping us switch up our hairstyles, but the heat is highly damaging to our hair and can cause split ends and damage. To help prevent this, be sure to use a heat protectant before styling with heat and limit how many days per week you use heat on your hair.

Color and chemical treatments: Highlights, lowlights, hair dye, permanent straightening treatments, and Brazilian blowouts all use a lot of harsh chemicals that damage the hair and lead to split ends.

Preventing Split Ends

Unfortunately, there’s no way to repair split ends other than cutting your hair. But the good news is there are some simple steps you can take to prevent split ends from happening in the future, such as:

Get regular haircuts

Wash your hair every other day instead of daily

Always use a heat protectant before heat styling

Use a leave-in conditioner or a hair mask once a week

Detangle wet hair with a wide toothcomb

Take biotin and folic acid supplements to strengthen the hair
