When browsing through beauty products, specifically hair products, you’ll often see companies using words like “natural ingredients” in order to showcase enhanced benefits. Sometimes natural remedies are what you need.
After all, many hair formulas are developed based on the properties of key ingredients found in nature. For example, coconut oil-infused condition or an avocado-based hair treatment utilizes the natural components of these ingredients, such as fatty acids and proteins.
5 Natural Hair Remedies You Have to Try
If you’re in-need of a more natural hair routine, you likely have some or all of the following ingredients in your home.
Honey offers a wide range of benefits based on its impressive list of properties. Being an emollient, it locks in moisture, reducing breakage; while its antioxidant properties prevent damage and strengthen follicles. Also beneficial for your scalp, honey can target issues such as eczema and dandruff.
To use: Simply dilute honey into water (i.e. 10 tbsp and 1 tbsp of honey). Once well-combined, massage onto your scalp, working it through your hair, starting at your roots. Wear a shower cap and allow to sit for 3 hours. Rinse with lukewarm water and shampoo.
- Coconut Oil
Known to improve dryness, enhance scalp health, protect hair against protein loss and UV exposure, support growth, and increase shine, coconut oil is all the craze. These benefits are mainly associated with coconut oil’s high lauric acid content.
To use: To restore hair health, simply melt coconut oil in your palms (1-2 tsp for short hair and 1 tbsp for long hair), applying to your hair and scalp. Wear a shower cap and allow it to moisturize overnight. Wash with a natural, gentle shampoo.
Although black tea can be used to help naturally darken greys, green tea has been studied based on its ability to support hair growth, enhance nutrient delivery to your hair follicles, and in some cases, prevent hair loss (based on its high EGCG content).
To use: Invest in a quality shampoo that contains green tea extract or make your own homemade rinse. To do so, add two green tea bags to boiling water, steep for 5-7 minutes, and allow to cool. Apply to your hair and scalp at the end of your shower.
- Aloe Vera
Plentiful in various vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and amino acids, many of which are linked to natural hair growth, aloe vera can also help combat an itchy scalp.
To use: Simply cut an aloe vera leaf, spoon out the gel, rub the mixture onto your hair and scalp, allow to sit for an hour, and then rinse. Repeat this process twice a week for optimal results.
- Lemon Juice
Lemons have natural bleaching properties, helping you lighten your hair, all while reducing oil and dandruff. Those who use lemon on a regular basis, also notice greater shine.
To use: For hair lightening, you can dilute fresh lemon juice or lemon essential oil in water, applying it to your hair. For best results, expose your hair to sunlight (for no more than an hour) before rinsing.
From yogurt to olive oil, there are many natural remedies available for optimal hair health — many of which are not only effective, but also highly cost efficient. It’s a win-win!
