hair lossHair loss has always proven an especially difficult issue for women. While men may not be happy about losing their hair, male baldness has become an accepted look (and sometimes even a deliberate choice) in today’s society. By contrast, women are more likely to feel self-conscious about a thinning hairline. Let’s take a moment to examine this upsetting problem.

Why Women Experience Hair Loss

Hair loss in women is hardly rare; in fact, over half of all women will experience this problem at some point in their lives. The reasons for it, however, can vary widely. common causes include:

Female pattern baldness – In this condition, shrinkage of the hair follicles slows the rate of regrowth, and the new hair can be abnormally thin and fragile. An inherited hormonal balance usually produces female pattern baldness.

Pregnancy – Pregnancy creates a problem called telogen effluvium. Even more hair may fall out after your baby is born as hormones which had prevented normal hair loss recede, allowing “delayed” hair loss to occur.

Menopause – Menopause is yet another hormonal shift that can cause thinning hair in women. the effects can resemble those of inherited female pattern baldness.

Toxins – Chemotherapy drugs, radiation therapy and other toxic shocks to the system can result in total loss of hair. This effect is usually temporary.

Tight hairstyles – A tight braid or other hairstyle that tugs on the hair follicles can damage them, resulting in irreversible traction alopecia.

What Can You Do?

Thankfully, you can compensate for it in a number of ways. For temporary issues such as prenatal and post-natal hair thinning, you simply opt to put up with it for a few months until your hair looks normal again. Hormonal causes of hair loss can often be fought using hormone replacement therapy. Wigs, hats and scarves are a popular option for coping with the long-term regrowth challenges posed by toxin exposure. Choosing loose hairstyles over tight, restrictive ones can help you avoid traction alopecia. LED therapy and other techniques can sometimes even reduce or reverse female pattern baldness.
