teenagersHair loss can be an emotional and traumatic experience, especially for teenagers. These adolescents experience hair loss due to a variety of reasons such as;

Stress

Whether its expectations set by parents to perform well at school, or social relationships with friends, teenagers tend to undergo immeasurable stress. Stress can push the hair follicles into a “resting” phase, which prevents new hair strands from forming. Over time, these hair follicles will start to fall out more easily due to the changes in hormone levels.

Bad eating habits

One of the most common reasons as to why teenagers experience hair loss is due to their bad eating habits. Teenagers tend to neglect a proper diet and end up developing vitamin deficiencies from a young age. By introducing more fruits and vegetables to daily meals, they will be able to produce more collagen and strengthen the capillaries that supply the hair shafts.

Hormones

As teenagers mature, they start to experience mental, physical, and emotional changes which can cause a surge of hormones within them. These hormones fluctuate their eating habits, emotions, and even hair growth. During this period, hormone-related conditions begin to awaken within teenagers such as PCOS, thyroid, and lupus – all of which have been known to cause hair loss.

Medication

Teenagers may require to take prescribed medication in order to combat severe acne, depression, or several other health conditions. While these medications can certainly help the condition, they were prescribed for – some side effects could also include potential hair loss. Acne medication and birth control pills contain certain chemicals that aid hair fall. These chemicals interfere with the normal cycle of scalp hair growth and can lead to telogen effluvium and anagen effluvium. Telogen effluvium is when hair follicles go into their resting phase (telogen) and fall out too early. Anagen effluvium occurs within a few days after taking the medication and occurs when the hairs are actively growing.
