dandruffHaving dandruff in your hair can not only be embarrassing, but it can also be uncomfortable. There are a lot of misconceptions about dandruff floating around. It’s important to know the facts about dandruff in order to be sure that you can treat it properly. The following guide provides insight on things that you need to know about dandruff.

What is Dandruff?

Dandruff occurs when the skin becomes dry and begins to flake. This occurs because the skin sheds faster than it should normally. This often begins with irritation and redness of the skin. It can look as though a rash is developing and within a short period of time your skin can become very dry and start flaking.

What Causes Dandruff?

Contrary to popular belief, dandruff doesn’t occur because of poor hygiene. People often assume that dandruff is a sign that they aren’t washing their hair enough, but this isn’t the case. Dandruff is commonly caused by an overgrowth of a fungus known as Malassezia.

The overgrowth often occurs as you get older, if you have a change in your hormone production, and when you have an increase in the amount of stress that you experience. There is also a kind of dandruff that’s known as contact dermatitis. This occurs when you come into contact with something that your skin reacts to badly to. This can be due to exposure to certain shampoos, conditioners, hair products or body wash.

Treatment Options for Dandruff

There are many treatment options available for dandruff. You can start by using an antifungal shampoo. There are many different antifungal shampoos on the market. They are designed to minimize the production of Malassezia which can decrease the occurrence of dandruff. These products often contain many different chemicals so they may not be right for everyone.

Some people choose to apply tea tree oil or shampoos that contain tea tree oil for a natural antifungal treatment option. If you notice that changing your shampoo or applying tea tree oil doesn’t help the problem, you may want to go to see a dermatologist. They can let you know if you simply have dandruff or if you have a more significant skin issue that needs to be addressed.
