Hair Loss in New Moms Is More Common Than You Think

new momsMother’s Day is the perfect time to reflect on all of the women who have brought babies into this world after experiencing the miracle of childbirth. Although having a child is one of the most beautiful and memorable life events, there are also many potential complications associated motherhood and for new moms the possibility of hair loss.

The Link Between Motherhood and Hair Loss

During pregnancy and post-pregnancy, a woman’s body goes through immense changes, particularly on a hormonal level. This can lead to an undesirable, yet common symptom — hair loss. Postpartum hair loss, otherwise known as postpartum telogen effluvium, causes the shedding of hair after a new mom gives birth.

In some cases, the amount of hair loss is minor. However, for others, this can become a rather severe and emotionally taxing issue. While most women will experience some degree of hair loss following childbirth, it is particularly noticeable in approximately 60 to 70 percent of women.

Although each individual is unique, during pregnancy, the majority of women will experience an increased rate of hairs which enter the resting phase. In fact, many women enjoy fuller hair while pregnant. Once the child is born, the hairs in the resting state will follow out. Most commonly, this occurs around three months after giving birth.

For those who experience significant hair loss during their pregnancy, another trigger that changes estrogen levels may be to blame, including the discontinuation of birth control, the possibility of a miscarriage, or any other underlying hormonal imbalance.

For those who are new mothers or will become mothers shortly, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk. While each woman is unique, the following tips can improve the potential outcome.
