cold weatherWhile many people enjoy the winter season, it is not always the best on your hair. There are a few ways cold weather affects your hair’s health and here is how to prevent some of those effects.

Dry Hair

One of the main ways that cold weather affects your hair is by making it dry. This is due to the lack of moisture in the air when temperatures drop. No moisture in the air means no moisture on your hair, leaving it more apt to become dry and break.

How to Prevent Dry Hair

Make sure you use a good moisturizer all year, but during the winter especially. A moisturizer works to, you guessed it, add moisture to your hair – making it stronger and less apt to break.

Seasonal Hair Loss

While you lose hair all year long, during the winter you may lose more hair due to a dehydrated scalp; this is called seasonal hair loss. You won’t lose all your hair this way, but you are prone to lose more during the colder months of the year.

How to Mitigate Seasonal Hair Loss

Again, make sure you have plenty of good moisturizer for your hair. Find a conditioner that works well and keeps your hair less dry. Another way to help deter the damages of the winter is to use less hair styling products. These only weigh down the hair and cause buildup.

Staticky Hair According to Fashionista:

Hair gets full of static in the wintertime due to lack of moisture in the air. Moisture is conducive for volume, movement and curl. In addition, the heat from your heavy winter apparel and outerwear such as scarves, wooly collars and jackets will cause fly-away strands.

How to Prevent Static in Your Hair

What prevents static in your hair? Again – a good conditioner with plenty of moisturizer. Also, be sure not to over-dry your hair. In fact, leaving it just a tad damp with conditioner will help keep the static away.
