The Hair Growth Cycle: What are the Four Stages of Hair Growth?

1: The Growing Phase: Anagen

The hair growth cycle consists of four cycles, with the first one being the growing stage, called anagen. This is the longest stage, lasting around 3-5 years on average. During this time, hair follicles are solely responsible for pushing your hair out until they reach the end of their lifespan and fall out.

2: The Transition Phase: Catagen

Next, your hair will enter the transition phase, which is referred to as catagen, and this is remarkably shorter, only lasting approximately 10 days. At this stage, the growth of your hair slows down and eventually separates from the bottom of the follicle.

3: The Resting Phase: Telegon

The third stage of hair growth, telegon, is the resting phase, as hair doesn’t grow nor fall out. During this period, new hair forms in follicles, lasting around 3 months.

4: The Shedding Phase: Exogen

Finally, your hair enters the exogen phase, which is when your hair sheds. The phase lasts around 2-5 months. It isn’t uncommon to lose up to 100 hair strands during this time.

What Is the Cause and Effect of Hair Growth Interruptions?

There are several factors that can impede hair growing at a steady and healthy rate, with the most prominent ones being medications, genetics, nutrition, improper hair care, and stress.

Any of these elements can cause the anagen phase to be cut short, preventing hair from growing to its longest potential length. Most shockingly, if your hair growth cycle isn’t able to persist as normal, you’ll find that your hair won’t grow as long as it once did!

To keep your strands healthy, it makes sense to use the right hair care products and cut down on heat styling, such as blow-drying on high heat, straightening, and curling, which can all cause significant damage to your hair.
