COVID-19Hundreds and thousands of people have lost their lives due to the Coronavirus. Besides that, people who have battled through and conquered the virus are now starting to experience hair loss. You wouldn’t expect to see a link between COVID-19 and hair loss, but studies have proven otherwise. A survey was conducted by Dr. Natalie Lambert, Associate Research Professor of Medicine at Indiana University, and titled “Long Hauler” Symptoms Survey Report.

Amongst these 1,500 survivors, hair loss was listed as the top 25 symptoms that were experienced by COVID-19 survivors. Approximately 27% of these recovering patients reported hair loss as one of their lingering symptoms.

Some doctors and experts believe that the psychological effects of recovering from COVID-19 have an indirect effect on the hair follicles, which can cause Telogen effluvium. Telogen effluvium is commonly known as a temporary form of hair loss that tends to occur after an illness, shock, traumatic event, weight loss, or even psychological stress. In other words, this is when hair follicles go into their resting phase (telogen) and fall out too early. It can usually be noticed on the top of the scalp and is much different in comparison to Alopecia Areata, where hair falls out in small patches.

On the other hand, Dr. Esther Freeman reported that there has been a growing number of hair loss cases from 38 different countries. People suffering from Telogen effluvium would usually start to notice hair loss about two to three months after an illness or traumatic experience. It has been about three months since the peak of COVID-19, which coincides with the timing for Telogen effluvium to occur.

On the bright side, since Telogen effluvium is a temporary condition, no unnecessary medical treatments are required as the hair will eventually start to grow back over time. By consuming a healthy and balanced diet, people suffering from hair loss can boost their overall performance as well as enhance and promote hair growth.
