Four Hair Masks You can Use to Protect Your Hair from Chlorine Damage

chlorineMost pools contain chlorine as a way to keep dangerous bacteria from forming in them. Unfortunately, chlorine can be very damaging to your hair. The guide that follows walks you through a few different types of masks you can make to treat your hair after it has been exposed to chlorine.

Create a Clarifying Mask

Chlorine needs to be removed from your hair to limit the damage that it causes. Mix four tablespoons of salt, three tablespoons of lemon juice, and three tablespoons of olive oil together in a bowl. Place the mixture on damp hair and let it sit for ten to fifteen minutes. The mixture will remove the chlorine from your hair. You can shampoo and condition your hair the same way you normally do after the mixture has been rinsed from your hair.

Create a PH Balancing Hair Mask

Chlorine can disrupt the PH balance in your hair. Mix ½ cup of apple cider vinegar and two tablespoons of lemon juice together and apply it to freshly washed hair. The mixture will restore the PH balance in your hair and leave it shinier than it was before you washed it. Rinse your hair thoroughly after five minutes and then condition your hair the way you normally do.

Create a Conditioning Mask for Your Hair

Chlorine can damage your hair and cause split ends to develop. Mix two tablespoons of olive oil, a half a cup of yogurt, and two tablespoons of warm honey together. Apply the mixture to damp hair and leave in place for twenty minutes. Rinse the mixture out and then wash and condition your hair. Your hair should feel softer and be more manageable when you are done.

Create a Hydrating Mask for Your Hair

Chlorine can be very drying to the hair. Peel a cucumber and place half of it in a blender to create a pulp. Mix two eggs and three tablespoons of olive oil with the pulp by hand and then apply it to damp hair. Allow the mixture to sit for thirty minutes and then wash and condition your hair. Your hair will feel softer and less brittle.

All of these masks are easy to make and very affordable. If you are on a swim team or swim in a pool on a daily basis, it’s best to apply at least one of these masks to your hair per week to minimize the damage the chlorine causes to it.
