We are Hair Loss Specialists in the Tampa Bay Area with 3 different locations across Florida.

holiday stressWe all tend to ditch healthy eating in favor of rich holiday desserts and indulgent dinners this time of year. That, along with holiday stress, can cause your hair to thin or even fall out. If you begin seeing excessive hair on the bathtub floor or in your brush throughout the busy holiday season, it isn’t necessarily time to panic. It is possible you’re experiencing a bout of hair loss brought on by holiday stress triggering underlying hair loss conditions.

Telogen effluvium

This is the clinical term for what takes place when facing high-stress scenarios which force your hair follicles to go into a sort of hibernation. Essentially, they stop developing new hair. Naturally, we lose some hair each day, however your hair follicles work continuously to replace what has fallen out. If they’re dormant and no longer producing more, you’ll see thinner hair and likely even bald spots.

This kind of hair loss commonly takes place on the top of the scalp as opposed to the back or sides. Fortunately, this type of hair loss isn’t always permanent; it’s in all likelihood that the hair follicles will come back on their own once your holiday stress is under control.

Trichotillomania

This is a type of obsessive-compulsive condition that causes the uncontrollable urge to pull your hair out of your scalp. Those who suffer from this disorder may as an alternative also pull hair from their eyebrows, arms or different areas of the body. Trichotillomania is typically triggered by stress and is used as a coping mechanism, but may occur because of feelings of depression, tension, or even boredom.

Alopecia Areata

With Alopecia, an out of balance immune system attacks its very own hair follicles, which results in hair loss. Experts are not certain of the exact cause of this disorder, but there are a few usual suspects. The most common one is stress. Holiday stress most likely wouldn’t be the sole cause, but adding it to your already hectic schedule can weaken your immune system and cause it to go into panic mode.
